Barbie 1970’s Dolls was a big decade for the doll that was moving with the times. In 1970 Sears’s catalogues offered a special for Christmas, a Mattel gift set named ‘Action Accents’. The set included a Living Barbie Doll with sports clothing and sports gear. The doll was made in Japan and featured in the Japanese Barbie doll booklet. 1970 also seen the Mattel factory burn down in Mexico. The following dolls were produced and released in 1970.

  • Living Barbie- (1116) wore a gold and silver swimsuit, blonde hair and movable waist, arms, legs, hands, neck, elbows and knees.
  • Living Skipper- (1117) blonde hair only, was movable the same as Barbie.
  • Trade in Skipper- (1147) a promotional offer from Mattel to introduce the new doll, for $1.99 and an old doll that you had, you could trade up for a new doll.
  • Talking Brad-(1114) was first made in Mexico, then in Hong Kong, a dark skin doll the same size as Ken.
  • Talking Christie-(1126) came out with a new set of clothes and packaged in a new pink box.
  • Walking Jamie-(1132) was released with blonde, brunette or titian hair. She was made for Sears and had a press-plate on her back to move her head, arms and legs.
  • Francie Hair Happenin’s-(1122) short blonde hair with bangs and 4 extra hair pieces.
  • Francie with Growin’ Pretty Hair-(1129) a new hairstyle and by pulling the hair it would shorten or lengthen. The only hair colour was blonde.
  • Pretty Pairs Dolls- Lori N Rori-(1133) / Nan N Fran-(1134) / Angie N Tangie-(1135). These dolls were the same size as Tutti, each doll held a teddy or doll in her arms.
  • Twist Barbie-(1160) came out dressed in a one piece rose and white swimsuit.
  • Twist Francie-(1170) Dressed in new bathing suit and had brown hair.
  • Twist Skipper-(1105) in a new Swimsuit, same hair style as her last issue.
  • Twist Julia-(1127) dressed in a new nurse’s uniform.
  • Twist Stacey-(1165) she had short hair and a new swimsuit.
  • Bendable leg Brad-(1142) his skin is darker and he had black molded hair.
  • Bendable leg Ken-(1124) Ken remained the same with molded brown hair.
  • Barbie 1970’s Dolls re-issued Talking Ken-(1111) in a new orange and blue outfit and also Spanish Talking Ken Doll-(8372) came out in orange shorts with a blue and orange jacket.
  • Talking Barbie-(1115) a new bathing suit, new doll box but the same doll as other standard from 1967 to 1969 with painted eyelashes. Made in Mexico and Hong Kong.
  • Spanish Talking Barbie-(8348) similar to standard doll made in Mexico and Hong Kong.
  • Talking Stacey-(1125) dressed in a new blue & silver swimsuit & a new doll box.
  • Straight Leg Skipper was produced and re-issued in 1970 the same as in 1969.
  • Standard Barbie-(1190) had a new bathing suit, new box, painted eyelashes which were different from the rooted eyelashes of 1968.

The most notable change in Barbies 1970’s Dolls was the 1971 Barbies were all now looking straight ahead where-as the previous dolls were always looking to the right. The following is a list of dolls that came out in 1971.

  • Live Action Barbie On Stage-(1152) / Live Action Ken On Stage-(1172) / Live Action PJ On Stage-(1153) were all released on motorized stages.
  • Live Action Barbie-(1155) / Ken-(1159) / PJ-(1156) and Christie-(1175) were released on Touch N Go Stands.
  • Barbie with Growin’ Pretty Hair-(1144) had blonde hair with 2 extra hair pieces, rooted eyelashes & centred eyes. This was the same for Francie Growin’ Pretty Hair-(1074)
  • Barbie Hair Happenin’s-(1174) a new doll came with 3 extra hair pieces. She had titian hair, centred eyes and divided fingers.
  • Malibu Barbie-(1067) had suntanned skin, divided fingers, long blonde hair, painted eyelashes and sunglasses.
  • Malibu Francie-(1068) & Malibu Skipper-(1069) came out the same as Barbie. Malibu Ken-(1088) was released with yellow/blonde molded hair.
  • Living Fluff-(1143) a new friend for Skipper, fluff had blonde hair in pigtails, brown eyes.
  • Living Barbie-(1116) & Living Skipper-(1117) had new clothes, boxes, a stand & centred eyes.
  • Talking PJ-(1113) / Talking Barbie-(1115)/ Christie-(1126) & Julia-(1128) all the same as 1970.
  • Talking Ken-(1111) in a new box & made in Hong Kong. Talking Julia-(1128) new hairstyle.
  • Bendable Leg Brad-(1142) & Talking Brad-(1114) now with darker skin, same outfit as 1970.
  • Barbie Hair Fair was released with centred eyes and new packaging.
  • Twist N Turn Barbie-(1160) with new centred eyes and new striped bathing suit.
  • Twist N Turn Francie-(1170) came with blonde or brunette hair and a new mini dress.
  • Twist Francie-(1170) had a new shoulder length hairstyle & a new pleated dress.Standard Barbie-(1190) was redesigned, new centred eyes and new doll box.

Barbies 1970’s Dolls would see more changes in 1972, for the first time no fashion booklets would be released and the first Busy Barbie, Ken, Steffie, Francie were produced in the USA. The Montgomery Ward Company ¬†was celebrating 100years as a company and had sold many dolls over the years saw Mattel re-issue an early edition of Barbie-(3210) to celebrate the centenary, she was very similar to the brunette Barbie of 1964 with the trademark black & white striped bathing suit. Below are the dolls released for 1972.

  • Walk Lively Barbie-(1182) had pale blonde hair, she had rooted eyelashes and a Walk N Turn stand. There was also Walk Lively Ken-(1184)/ Steffie-(1183) & Miss America-(3200). All of them had better moving arms and their heads turned when their legs moved back & forth.
  • Malibu PJ-(1187) suntan skin, pigtails and painted eyelashes.
  • Busy Barbie-(3311) was made with hands that could open & close & long blonde parted hair.
  • Busy Ken-(3314) & Busy Francie-(3313) & Busy Steffie-(3312) were also released in 1972.
  • Talking Busy Barbie-(1186) short blonde hair, rooted eyelashes & a new outfit with boots.
  • Barbies 1970’s doll era also released Talking Busy Ken-(1196) & Steffie-(1186).
  • Pose N Play Skipper-(1179)came with swinging arms & a Swing-A-Round Gym. Titian hair.
  • Pose N Play Tiff-(1199) had brown eyes, long titian hair & painted eyelashes.
  • Barbie with Growin’ Pretty Hair-(1144) new hairstyle, 4curl hair piece + braid & new clothes.
  • Forget-Me-Not Barbie-(3269) was the same as Malibu Barbie-(1067).
